August Roundup + Upcoming gigs!

August...

It passed so quickly! Not a whole lot of DJing was done, but I did have the chance to see some good live shows:

Maxine Brown -- she used to sing with Chuck Jackson. Nice show, the Bacharach/David material was best.

Detroit Cobras - the sound was awful! But Rachel Nagy's voice DOES really sound like that. And they played Garnet Mimms!

Mighty Hannibal - 82, blind, stomping around like James Brown. Great rendition of that Jesus vs. Heroin song.

Archie Bell - Surprisingly vibrant and ready to go. Pulled off a show that comprised a beach music medley (incl. Sam Cooke among others), 70's midtempo disco-funk, breezy 60's Atlantic Soul and even Northern Soul favorites like "Showdown". Audience exhortations, general vibe and everything was excellent. More, please!

Next DJ gig is this Saturday at Matchless with DJ Fondu (of Park Slope) -- 11pm-?
